A finalist for the position of Hopkinton Public Schools’ Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development has been selected. An integral part of the process involves parent, staff, and community input. The Superintendent, Dr. Cathy MacLeod, invites interested parents, staff, and community members to a public forum to meet Dr. Cavanaugh, and ask any questions they may have. Meet the Finalist:
Dr. Carol Cavanaugh: Dr. Cavanaugh holds a Ph.D. in Middle and High School Literacy Strategies from Lesley University, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching from Boston University. Her undergraduate degree was in English, and was also awarded from Boston University.
She is currently the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment at the Uxbridge Public Schools, and an Adjunct Professor at Worcester State and Lesley Universities. She is a founding partner in Brunell and Cavanaugh Consulting, an education consulting business (1999-present). She has previously served as English Teacher/Department Chair and Assistant Principal (2005-2015) for the Westborough Public Schools, and began her career in education as an English teacher and Department Chair in the Auburn Public Schools (1994-2005).
On June 17 and 19, Superintendent Dr Cathy MacLeod held public forums on the Strategic Plan Overview, which was put together over the past year incorporating feedback from various forums and survey data. The Mission Statement of “Learn, Create, and Achieve Together” remains the same, but the Vision Statement and Values have been updated (see below). The plan is currently just a broad overview and the following refinements will take place over the summer:
- Finalize Action Steps
- Align Budget Priorities and School Improvement Plans (SIP) with the Strategic Plan
- Identify Evaluation Goals aligned with the plan (Superintendent, Administrators, Teachers)
The School Committee approved the Overview, Vision and Values at their June 19 meeting. Then in September 2014, the Superintendent will seek School Committee approval of the Strategic Plan, Technology Plan and Foreign Language Plan. On June 3 and 4, Superintendent Dr Cathy MacLeod held two public forums to explain the philosophy behind co-teaching, which is one of the instructional interventions that will be offered for students who need it next year in Math and English Language Arts (ELA) in Kindergarten through Grade 8. As you may have heard, on January 31 Hopkinton Public Schools switched away from the iContact mass email service that it had been using for several years. Parents must now all create SchoolWires accounts and register for E-Alerts on the School District Website.
If you have NOT received any school emails in February, you may not be signed up correctly yet. A message was sent out on February 10 with more detailed sign-up instructions, but if you are not signed up correctly you probably did not receive the message. The SchoolWires sign-up requires many more steps than the old system. Be sure to go into your Subscriptions settings and select:
- Other Areas of Interest > Change the School > Change Channel to “Parents” > Check “Announcements”
- Repeat for each school for which you wish to receive announcements .
- Click on “I’m Done” to save your settings.

At the November 25 School Committee meeting, Chair Nancy Burdick reported that the School Committee had voted at that evening’s Executive Session to release several Executive Session meeting minutes from the 2011-12 school year. Items of note:
3/28/12: The School Committee discussed a proposal from Superintendent Landman to re-negotiate his evaluation procedure. They decided not to agree to this proposal, and proceed as planned with the Superintendent’s evaluation on April 26 or May 3.
4/26/12: Dr. Landman and his attorney noted that since the parties were not able to renegotiate the terms of his evaluation process, they were prepared to submit a proposal for his separation of employment.
5/3/12: The Committee reviewed and discussed proposed language for Dr. Landman’s resignation letter; a Joint statement to be issued by the Committee and Dr. Landman; language for a reference letter to be prepared by a member of the school committee; the proposed settlement agreement between the HPS School Committee and Dr. Jonathan Landman. According to advice of the Committee’s counsel, these draft documents were part of an ongoing settlement discussion with counsel representing Dr. Landman and, as such, are not public record and are not admissible in any forum. The Committee was instructed by counsel that they should be considered confidential and should not be released or forwarded to any other party.
Dr Landman signed a separation agreement on May 16, 2012 and submitted his resignation letter on May 17, 2012. The separation agreement stated that Dr Landman had a 7 day waiting period in which he could revoke the agreement, and that therefore the agreement did not become effective or enforceable until 7 days after it was signed. After the 7 day waiting period, his resignation was announced via a press release on May 25, 2012, which was 4 days after the May 21, 2012 Annual Town Election.

This will be an opportunity to learn about their priorities and how they are collaborating to meet the needs of your children. On November 18, Superintendent Dr. MacLeod and Center School Principal Mrs. Dubeau will share their vision for Early Childhood Education in Hopkinton.
