Strategic Plan Forum Update

HPS Administration

On June 17 and 19, Superintendent Dr Cathy MacLeod held public forums on the Strategic Plan Overview, which was put together over the past year incorporating feedback from various forums and survey data. The Mission Statement of “Learn, Create, and Achieve Together” remains the same, but the Vision Statement and Values have been updated (see below). The plan is currently just a broad overview and the following refinements will take place over the summer:

  • Finalize Action Steps
  • Align Budget Priorities and School Improvement Plans (SIP) with the Strategic Plan
  • Identify Evaluation Goals aligned with the plan (Superintendent, Administrators, Teachers)

The School Committee approved the Overview, Vision and Values at their June 19 meeting. Then in September 2014, the Superintendent will seek School  Committee approval of the Strategic Plan, Technology Plan and Foreign Language Plan. The June 19 forum is available for viewing on the website under Programs > Government Meetings > June 2014 > School Committee 06/19/14. See below for the documents presented at the meeting.

Fun with Flamingos!

Thank you to everyone who has participated in our second annual Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser. We had a lot of fun and have raised over $700. The flocks are now sold out for this year, but click here if you got flocked and want to find out who flocked you. We plan to use the money for more signage and publicity to promote Town Meeting 2015, another donation to the Tax Relief Fund and another sponsorship of a Veteran’s breakfast at the Senior Center. See our photo gallery below.

School Committee Updates

Hopkins School

At their June 12 meeting,  Jon Graziano was elected Chair, and Ellen Scordino was elected Vice-Chair of the Hopkinton School Committee.  The committee also voted to award a contract to Springboard Education to provide before and after school care at Hopkins School next year.  The program would also be available to Center School students, but would be located at Hopkins. In addition, they voted to increase school lunch prices by $0.25 across the board next year in order to continue to get federal reimbursements. The new Middle School Handbook and Program of Studies for 2014-15 were also approved.

At their June 19 meeting, the School Committee voted to continue using the MCAS test next year, instead of the new PARCC test.  The following year in 2015-16, the state will determine which test all districts will use, but for the coming year districts can choose. The committee also voted to approve the High School Handbook and Program of Studies for 2014-15.  The Director of Finance projected a year end balance of $145,000, of which he recommended $125,000 be used to pre-pay special education tuition (the district receives a discount when they pre-pay) and $20,000 to purchase two new copiers to replace two units that have experienced significant levels of downtime this year. The committee approved his recommendations.

Hopkinton Community Visioning Workshop – POSTPONED

  • June 18 @ 6:00pm at the Senior Center
  • After thoughtful consideration, the Visioning Steering Group (appointed by the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen) agreed to re-schedule the Community Workshop, which was scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 6 pm. The Steering Group, in consultation with Town Hall staff and the consultants, agreed that a detailed plan for public input needed to be developed and that any attempt at creating a vision for Hopkinton would greatly benefit only from a wide range of opinions of Hopkinton residents and organizations. We appreciate your interest in the June 18 workshop and you will be invited to participate in future workshops, which are expected to be held in September.More information to come. In the meantime, your continued discussion will help in shaping the discussions in September. Click Mindmixer to join the conversation.

What are we fundraising for?

We’re glad you asked. Educate Hopkinton’s greatest charge is to get more people to attend Town Meeting and vote on how our tax dollars are spent. Last year our flock earned us two banners that were hung on Town Hall and the Middle School Tennis Courts, yard signs, a donation to Hopkinton’s Tax Relief Fund and sponsorship of one Veterans Breakfast at the Senior Center.

This year we hope to provide Hopkinton with:

  • More signage to raise awareness for Town Meeting
  • A greater donation to the Tax Relief Fund
  • More sponsorships for the Veteran’s Breakfasts at the Senior Center

So have a little fun, send a flock to a friend and support some good causes!
